As the year came to a close, Star Bank bid a heartfelt farewell to a remarkable individual whose career has left an indelible mark on the organization, the communities the bank serves, and the banking industry as a whole. Clyde Fischer, a longtime board member, retired at year-end, concluding an extraordinary 68-year career in banking, including 15 years on Star Bank’s Board of Directors and an 11-year tenure as our Chief Financial Officer.

A Journey Through Banking Excellence

Clyde’s career began in 1956 as a messenger with Northwestern Bank in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Over the years, his dedication and work ethic led him to a variety of roles such as teller, head teller, lending officer, and eventually controller—a testament to his longevity and commitment to excellence. It was at Northwestern Bank that Clyde first met Harry Wahlquist, founder of Star Bank, forming a lifelong friendship that would later become integral to Star Bank's success.

From there, Clyde’s banking journey included leadership roles at: First National Bank – Aitkin (President, 8 years); First National Bank – Edgerton (CFO, 6 years); First State Bank of Eden Prairie (CFO, 2 years); Dean Financial Services (CFO, 2 years); and Star Bank (CFO, 11 years).

His tenure as CFO at Star Bank coincided with the bank's growth from one office to the 11 locations it now operates. In addition to his executive role, Clyde served as an outside director on Star Bank’s Board of Directors for 15 years, as well as a member of the board for the bank’s holding company.

A Legacy of Leadership and Mentorship

Clyde’s influence extended beyond Star Bank, including his tenure as a teacher at Duke University, Notre Dame, and the University of Oklahoma, where he inspired the next generation of bankers. He also served on the Board of Regents at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, underscoring his dedication to the industry’s future.

In 2016, Clyde was honored with the Legacy Award for Community Banking from BankIn Minnesota (formerly ICBM), recognizing his then-60 years of service. Now, with 68 years of banking experience, Clyde retires having witnessed and contributed to monumental changes in the industry, from the rise of digital banking to decades of personal interactions with employees and customers alike.

Wisdom and Warmth

Clyde’s advice for aspiring community bankers remains timeless: “Try to learn people skills. It’s important to interact with people—your fellow employees and especially bank customers. You can’t always get your way, but learning both sides of an issue is important.”

Looking Ahead

As Clyde retires, he plans to spend more time enjoying the outdoors, traveling with his wife Mary, and cherishing moments with their four children and 13 grandchildren.

A Grateful Farewell

Clyde, thank you for your incredible advocacy, leadership, and friendship,” said Katie Wahlquist, Star Bank President & CEO. “Your legacy at Star Bank and within our family is immeasurable. Without your guidance, hard work, and dedication, many of us wouldn’t be here today. Your efforts helped Star Bank grow, expand, and thrive.”

Clyde Fischer has left an unparalleled contribution to the banking industry, the community,  and Star Bank. He leaves behind a legacy of growth, mentorship, and integrity that will inspire generations to come.

From all of us at Star Bank, congratulations on your well-deserved retirement and thank you for all your years of service, Clyde.
